The experience of being bereaved by suicide is both significant and unique. Those bereaved by suicide loss can often find it difficult to cope as they struggle with feelings of helplessness, hopelessness, trauma, confusion, isolation, sadness, guilt, anger, shame and a deep and unending need to understand why.
The support needs of those bereaved by suicide are different for everyone and change over time.
Support can come in different forms including:
- informal support (from friends and family)
- practical support (household chores, cooking meals)
- support returning to work, school, sport
- professional support (offered by clinicians experienced in grief and loss, including the unique nature of suicide bereavement)
StandBy is accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, providing free face-to face and/or telephone support at a time and place that is best for each individual.
